Many of us know that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but did you know that this month is also dedicated to raising awareness for other important causes? In October, we celebrate our differences and work together to educate and provide additional resources for individuals living with disabilities.
Month-long disability awareness celebrations in October include:
- Down Syndrome Awareness Month
- National Disability Employment Awareness Month
- National Spina Bifida Awareness Month
- Occupational Therapy Awareness Month
Special Disability Awareness days that happen in October are:
- October 6- World Cerebral Palsy Day
- October 8- World Sight Day
- October 16th – World Spine Day
This year also marks the 30th anniversary of the American’s with Disabilities Act (ADA) being signed into law! Resources for Independence is a direct result of this historical law being passed, and our mission is to make sure that each of our consumers is living a fulfilled and independent lifestyle the best they can! Without the ADA, persons with disabilities wouldn’t have equal access to everyday necessities to live like wheelchair ramps, service animals, assistive technologies, and so much more!
We are excited to celebrate this month and educate our local community about what it’s like to live with a disability. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to see all of the Disability Awareness Month content, and to meet some of the amazing staff who work at Resources for Independence!
