In our community, we believe that independence is a fundamental right for all, and our independent living center is here to support that vision. Since starting RFI, we have provided individuals with disabilities the tools, resources, and community connections they need to lead empowered, self-directed lives. Today, we’re excited to share more about what we do and how we work every day to promote independence and accessibility for everyone.

1. What is Independent Living?

Independent living is about more than having a space to call your own. It’s about having the support to make choices, access community services, and live with dignity. Our center offers a range of services and resources designed to empower individuals in every aspect of life. From accessible housing assistance and employment support to assistive technology demonstrations and advocacy, we’re here to meet each individual’s unique needs.

2. Assistive Technology: Unlocking New Possibilities

One of the most impactful services we offer is assistive technology. With support from programs like the Assistive Technology Toolkit Grant, our center provides hands-on demonstrations of devices that aid in everyday tasks. Whether it’s a digital magnifier, voice-to-text software, or adaptive tools, assistive technology can transform daily routines and open new opportunities. By giving our community members a chance to test and choose these devices, we help them gain independence and confidence.

3. Connecting with the Community: Building a Support Network

Independence doesn’t mean going it alone. Our center fosters a sense of community where members connect, share experiences, and support one another. We offer workshops, support groups, and social events to strengthen these bonds and provide ongoing education. These connections are vital—they remind us all that, together, we can overcome challenges and achieve personal goals.

4. Advocacy and Education: Empowering for Change

Advocacy is a cornerstone of our mission. We work closely with local and state organizations to ensure that individuals with disabilities have access to the services, rights, and accommodations they deserve. Through partnerships with agencies like the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), we also educate community leaders and businesses about disability rights, fostering an inclusive environment where everyone is valued.

5. A Special Thanks to Our Supporters

The journey to independence is made possible by the support of our donors, volunteers, and local businesses. Contributions from our annual fundraisers, like the golf tournament, enable us to expand our services and invest in new technology. Every dollar raised helps us serve more individuals and provide the resources that make independence attainable.
