Recently, I had the opportunity to conduct a disability awareness activity with the Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) Program. The goal of this presentation was to provide students with a deeper understanding of the challenges individuals with physical disabilities face every day. While textbooks and coursework offer essential knowledge, firsthand stories and experiential learning create a lasting impact.

A highlight of the presentation was the story of Assistant Director John Michaels, who has spent the past 30 years navigating life with a physical disability. John’s journey is one of resilience, adaptation, and perseverance, and his insights gave the students a powerful perspective on the real-world experiences of individuals with disabilities.

During the session, we explored various barriers—both physical and societal—that people with disabilities encounter. From accessibility issues to misconceptions and biases, we discussed the ways in which healthcare professionals, including PTAs, can contribute to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment.

By participating in hands-on activities and engaging in meaningful discussions, the students gained a newfound appreciation for the importance of empathy in their future careers. It’s one thing to study rehabilitation techniques and treatment plans, but it’s another to truly understand the person behind the condition.

Disability awareness is not just about recognizing challenges; it’s about fostering inclusion, respect, and advocacy. Educating future healthcare professionals on these realities helps ensure that individuals with disabilities receive the compassionate, patient-centered care they deserve.

A big thank you to the PTA Program for their engagement and to John Michaels for sharing his inspiring journey. Together, we are taking steps toward a more inclusive future!
